This class is an introduction to the field of education. Students will begin their understanding of children; physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. Students will be exposed to a variety of educational settings and may participate in field trips, job shadow opportunities, and community outreach.

Prerequisite: Attendance is a crucial component of this course, as well as completing the required number of field-work and classroom hours in various job shadows and internships. Both in the field placements and in the classroom students will be expected to conduct themselves in a respectful, professional manner at all times.

Description: This class is an introduction to the world of education. Students will begin their understanding of human growth and development by studying children of all ages. Students will begin to understand the whole child’s development which includes physical, cognitive, and social-emotional. Students will investigate teaching as a profession and how the field of education has changed. Students will be exposed to a variety of educational settings and may participate in field trips, job shadow opportunities, and community outreach. Students should expect to work with children, exercise communication skills, responsibility, dependability,and work well independently as well as part of a team.
This course can be taken independently or as part of a two-year course of studies along with Teaching and Early Education.
Industry Recognized Certifications: AHA First aid/Infant/Child/Adult CPR and Mandated Reporting.
Introduction to Education Instructor
Mrs. Maxfield grew up in Saco and presently lives there with her husband.
She attended UMO and graduated with a B.S. degree in Early Childhood Education, and also received her teaching certificate at that time. Before coming here, she worked for 14 years at a local childcare program.
Mrs. Maxfield is a qualified infant/child/adult CPR and first aid instructor. She attended UMF and graduated in 2017 with her masters in Early Childhood Education.
